How does a 1920s Craftsman chimney above the surf hold up next to a ridge home in Top of the World? Differently, and the town has both. We sweep and inspect each one on its own terms, then show you the findings.

In this town, spark arrestors, crown sealing and repointing old brick come up as often as sweeping. Choose the service that matches what you're seeing, or ask for an inspection if you'd rather start with a full picture.

Fire country by the sea
In October 1993, a wildfire swept through the canyons above town, burning more than 14,000 acres and destroying or damaging 441 homes. The National Fire Protection Association later ranked it among the largest-loss wildland fires in the country. Laguna Canyon, Bluebird Canyon and the open land of Laguna Coast Wilderness Park still sit right against neighborhoods, and dry brush plus Santa Ana wind is a combination locals take seriously.
For a chimney, the lesson runs in two directions. A spark arrestor cap with intact mesh keeps your own fire from sending embers onto a dry slope, and it blocks wind-blown debris from settling in the flue. The tech checks that the mesh isn't torn, clogged with soot or rusted thin, and that the cap is fastened well enough to stay put in a gust. Homes along ridgelines such as Top of the World, the town's highest point at just over 1,000 feet, catch the strongest wind.

Our approach
Older cottages often hide trouble you can't see from the living room, like a crumbling smoke chamber or a flue tile cracked during a past quake. The tech takes photos, explains each one in plain terms and separates the urgent from the cosmetic. Floors stay covered and the vacuum runs throughout. What happens next is your choice.
How it works
Say what you've noticed and what kind of fireplace you have. Gas or wood changes what we bring.
Firebox, flue, roof and crown are checked in order, and whatever turns up is walked through with you in plain terms.
Some visits end with a sweep. Others need a cap, a crown or masonry. Nothing extra starts until you say yes.
Salt, sun and old brick
Plein-air painters settled here in the early 1900s, and many of the Craftsman bungalows from that era still stand downtown and in South Laguna. A 1980–81 citywide survey listed 706 homes and structures as historically significant, most built before 1940. Chimneys that old usually predate modern clay liners or have liners that have cracked with time, and the lime-rich mortar between their bricks softens as sea air keeps it damp. Repointing with a compatible mortar keeps the brick sound without trapping moisture.
Rain is light, roughly 12 to 13 inches a year, but it comes in bursts on steep ground. Bluebird Canyon saw a landslide in June 2005 that destroyed more than a dozen houses, a reminder that hillside settling moves foundations and the masonry stacks built on them. After a wet winter, look for new gaps where the chimney meets the siding or roof, and for flashing pulled loose from tile.

FAQ
Short answers to what people ask most. More are on the full FAQ page.
It might be, but age alone tells you nothing either way. Many chimneys from that period were built without a flue liner or have clay tiles that have since cracked. A camera inspection shows whether the flue is intact enough for a fire, needs a new liner, or should stay decorative until it's repaired. You'll see the footage before deciding.
Ask whether the cap has a spark arrestor and whether its mesh is whole and unclogged. Ask about the crown and flashing too, since gaps there let embers and debris reach places they shouldn't. On fire-weather days, the simplest step is not burning at all. A chimney inspection covers every one of these points in a single visit.
Near the ocean, damp salty air keeps mortar wet longer, and older lime mortar breaks down faster under those conditions. Once joints open, rain gets into the brick and the damage speeds up. Repointing removes the failed mortar to a set depth and replaces it with a mix that suits the original brick, so the repair doesn't crack the masonry around it.
Not always. Sweeping depends on what's in the flue, and an occasional fire may leave very little creosote. The inspection is the part not to skip, since nests, fallen debris and cracked tiles have nothing to do with how often you burn. A clean flue means no sweep, just a report saying so.
Yes. Plenty of Laguna Beach fireplaces were converted to gas logs. The tech checks that the damper is fixed open as a log set requires, that the flue above is clear and lined, and that the cap isn't blocked. If the old firebox has cracked panels or loose brick, fireplace repair can handle that before the logs go back in.
