Sweeps for fireplaces that see a handful of fires a year, inspections after ground movement, caps sized for windy bluff tops, and masonry work on stacks that face the ocean. Pick a service below to see what the visit covers.

Know the ground
Few cities in Los Angeles County deal with moving ground the way this one does. The Portuguese Bend landslide covers roughly 260 acres of the peninsula, and in 2024 movement there got bad enough that gas service was suspended to 135 homes and power was cut to 245 more. A masonry stack is rigid. When the house below it settles or tilts, the chimney tends to show it first: a gap at the flashing, a crack running through the crown, or a flue tile that has slipped out of line.
A 1970s boom in coastal condos pushed residents to incorporate in 1973, and those complexes now share the city with older hillside streets in Miraleste and Eastview. So the peninsula has both factory-built fireboxes with metal flues and site-built brick. Each one fails differently. A metal chase top rusts through under coastal air, while brick shows its trouble in the mortar joints. Our Level 2 inspection includes a camera run through the flue when movement or a real estate sale calls for a closer look.

How visits go
The peninsula office is home base for this crew, so the techs who come out know the bluff roads and the way fog hangs on the hills. They lay down drop cloths, run a vacuum while they work, then walk you through what they found before anything else is decided.
How it works
Say what you've noticed and what kind of fireplace you have. Gas or wood changes what we bring.
Firebox, flue, roof and crown are checked in order, and whatever turns up is walked through with you in plain terms.
Some visits end with a sweep. Others need a cap, a crown or masonry. Nothing extra starts until you say yes.
Coast and fire season
Point Vicente Lighthouse stands on a cliff about 130 feet above the water, and the homes along Palos Verdes Drive West live in the same wet, salty air. Steel caps, damper plates and spark screens corrode faster here than they would a few miles inland. A rusted screen with holes in it no longer stops sparks, and a cap with a rotted lid lets rain straight down the flue during the short winter wet season.
Fire risk is the other half of the picture. Virtually all of Rancho Palos Verdes carried a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone designation from 2008 until the state's 2025 map update. Canyons full of dry brush sit close to many backyards. That makes a sound cap with spark arrestor mesh worth checking before the windy months, especially if the fireplace burns wood. Gas-only fireplaces still benefit from a cap that keeps out rain, leaves and nesting birds.

Around the peninsula
We work in Miraleste, Ladera Linda, Eastview, Seaview, Abalone Cove and the Portuguese Bend area, plus homes near Hesse Park and along Palos Verdes Drive South. Neighbors in Palos Verdes Estates and Rolling Hills Estates are close by too.

FAQ
Short answers to what people ask most. More are on the full FAQ page.
Yes, and sooner is better if you have noticed sticking doors or new wall cracks. Ground movement can separate a chimney from the house, open the crown, or shift flue tiles so smoke and heat reach framing. A tech looks at the outside joints and flashing, then runs a camera down the flue. Should repairs turn up, the tech walks you through them and you choose the next step, which might be anything from masonry repair to a partial rebuild.
Scheduling and dispatch for the peninsula run out of that office, but the actual work always happens at your home. Ring us between six in the morning and ten at night, Sunday through Friday, explain the symptoms you're seeing, and a visit gets booked at a time that fits your week.
For a wood-burning fireplace, usually yes. Much of the city has been mapped as high or very high fire hazard, and dry canyon brush is common close to homes. The mesh on a spark arrestor cap catches embers before they leave the flue. Salt air does corrode it over time, so a tech checks the mesh for holes and the cap for loose fasteners on every sweep.
NFPA 211 recommends an annual inspection, and sweeping happens when the inspection finds buildup worth removing. Light use often means little creosote, but a chimney left idle can collect nests, leaves and debris that block the flue. A yearly look keeps you informed, and the sweep itself is only done when the flue needs it.
It does. Gas logs still send combustion gases up the flue, and a damper clamp, blocked cap or cracked liner can push them back into the room. The tech checks that the damper stays open the right amount, that the flue draws, and that nothing has nested at the top. Water from the winter rains can also rust gas components and the firebox floor.
