Sparks and stables

How do the trails and stables affect chimney care?

Mostly through fire exposure. Stables, hay storage and the brush along trail corridors give a stray ember plenty to land on. A cap with intact mesh is the part of the chimney that keeps embers inside the flue, and it is also the part that takes the most weather. Mesh can clog with soot on a well-used wood fireplace, which slows the draft, or rust open until it no longer catches anything. A quick look on each visit tells you which way yours is heading, and a replacement cap is straightforward if it has failed.

Creosote is the other piece. A fireplace that burns oak or seasoned firewood on cool evenings builds up deposits in the flue, and creosote is combustible. A flue cleaning removes it before a chimney fire can start. The tech checks how thick and what type the buildup is, since glazed creosote takes different tools than loose soot. If the flue tiles behind the deposits are cracked, that shows up on the camera and gets explained before anything else happens.

Clear steps, your decision

A tech comes out from our Rancho Palos Verdes office, sets drop cloths over the hearth area and keeps a vacuum running during the sweep. Once the flue and the exterior are checked, you hear what turned up in plain terms. Any repair waits for your go-ahead.

How it works

Call, look, decide

  1. 01

You call or send the form

Say what you've noticed and what kind of fireplace you have. Gas or wood changes what we bring.

  2. 02

    A tech goes through it

Firebox, flue, roof and crown are checked in order, and whatever turns up is walked through with you in plain terms.

  3. 03

    You pick the work

Some visits end with a sweep. Others need a cap, a crown or masonry. Nothing extra starts until you say yes.

Slopes and settling

Hillside ground and the winter rains

In July 2023 the Peartree Lane landslide destroyed several homes in Rolling Hills Estates, a reminder that the peninsula's slopes do move. Most settling is far gentler than that. Still, a few inches of shift over years is enough to crack a masonry chimney where it meets the roof, or to open the seam between the stack and the wall. If the house has new cracks in drywall or doors that suddenly stick, include the chimney when you have things looked at.

Rain season, roughly November through March, finds every gap those small movements created. Moisture slipping in through a split crown or loose flashing can rot the framing around the chimney and rust the damper. Fixing the entry point early is far simpler than repairing the wood behind it. Before the first storms, a tech can check the crown, reseal flashing and confirm the cap keeps rain out of the flue, so the wet months pass without surprises.

  • Roofline cracks in brick
  • Crown and flashing condition
  • Damper rust from water

FAQ

Rolling Hills Estates chimney questions

We keep horses and store hay near the house. What should we check on the chimney?

Start with the spark arrestor cap. The mesh should be whole, free of rust holes and not caked with soot. Also look at the distance between the chimney top and any trees or overhanging branches. During an inspection the tech checks the cap, the crown and the flue, and lets you know if anything would let embers escape.

Is this the same as Rolling Hills?

No. Rolling Hills Estates is its own city, incorporated in 1957, and it borders the separate city of Rolling Hills. We serve Rolling Hills Estates homes; if your address is in Rolling Hills, tell the scheduler up front; access to your street gets worked out ahead of the visit.

How do I know if my flue needs cleaning?

Signs include a smoky smell after fires, smoke spilling into the room, flakes of black material on the hearth, or a fire that is hard to keep lit. Any of these suggest buildup or a blockage. An inspection measures what is actually in the flue, and a sweep follows only if it is needed.

My chimney cracked after the ground shifted. Does it need rebuilding?

Not always. Hairline cracks in mortar and a split crown are usually repaired in place. A stack that leans, has loose bricks at the top, or has pulled away from the house is more serious and can call for partial rebuilding. The tech explains what they find, and you decide.

Do you work on Saturdays?

No, Saturday is our one closed day. The other six, phones and visits run from early morning (6 AM) until late evening (10 PM). A Sunday slot works well if weekdays are busy. Give us a ring, mention whether the fireplace burns wood or gas, and a time gets set.
