Chimney Sweep & Repair in Redondo Beach, CA Harbor air, beach blocks

  • Homes and multi-unit buildings
  • Open Sunday through Friday
  • Findings before any work

Ocean air rolls in off King Harbor and the pier nearly every day, and metal chimney parts in South Redondo and along the Esplanade pay for it. Caps, chase tops and dampers here tend to rust before the masonry shows any wear.

Housing mix

Duplexes, condos and older cottages

Redondo Beach has been a city since 1892, and its housing reflects more than a century of building. Small single-family homes sit beside duplexes and fourplexes, and newer mixed-use buildings line Pacific Coast Highway. In a duplex or condo, one chimney stack can hold more than one flue, each serving a different unit. A problem in one flue, or water entering at a shared crown, affects every household connected to it. Inspection in these buildings means checking each flue and the shared parts separately.

Plenty of condo and townhome fireplaces are factory-built units with metal flues inside a wood-framed chase. The chase top, often galvanized sheet metal, is the weak point near the beach. Once it rusts, water runs down inside the chase and can rot the framing well before anyone notices a leak. A stainless chase cover and cap holds up better to salt air than plain galvanized steel. The tech also checks the framing inside the chase for soft or stained wood.

On the visit

Clean work, clear choices

Drop cloths go over the hearth and floor first, and a vacuum runs the whole time. After the inspection you see what was found, hear which issues matter now and which can wait, and choose what gets done. Calls are picked up six days a week; only Saturday is closed.

  • Each flue checked on shared stacks
  • Room protected during work
  • You set the priorities

How it works

Call, look, decide

  1. 01

You call or send the form

Say what you've noticed and what kind of fireplace you have. Gas or wood changes what we bring.

  2. 02

    A tech goes through it

Firebox, flue, roof and crown are checked in order, and whatever turns up is walked through with you in plain terms.

  3. 03

    You pick the work

Some visits end with a sweep. Others need a cap, a crown or masonry. Nothing extra starts until you say yes.

Beach climate

Mild weather, constant salt

Redondo's coastal setting keeps temperatures mild year-round, with almost rainless summers and a short wet season in winter. That sounds easy on a chimney, and for the masonry it mostly is. Metal is another story. Steel fasteners, spark screens and damper plates sit in damp, salty air for months, and a damper that rusts shut or partly open is a frequent complaint in beach-area homes. Left alone, a stuck-open damper lets damp air and drafts into the room all winter.

Rain, when it comes, finds the weak spots fast. A crown with hairline cracks, flashing that has pulled loose, or brick that has turned porous can let water into the flue and the attic in a single storm. Vapor-permeable sealant on the brick and a sound crown keep that water out while letting the masonry dry. On a factory-built unit, the same job falls to the chase cover and storm collar, which the tech checks for gaps and rust.

I live in a Redondo Beach duplex. Who is responsible for the chimney?

That depends on your ownership or HOA arrangement, so check your documents. On the technical side, a shared stack usually has separate flues for each unit plus a shared crown and cap. We can inspect your flue and note the condition of the shared parts, which gives you something concrete to bring to a neighbor or association.

Why does my damper keep sticking near the beach?

Salt air corrodes cast iron and steel dampers, and a fireplace that sits unused lets rust build on the hinge and plate. Sometimes cleaning and freeing it is enough. If the plate has warped or rusted through, one option is a replacement damper that closes at the top of the flue instead. The tech shows you the condition and explains the choices.

Does a chimney need an inspection if we only light it a few times a year?

Yes. Under NFPA 211, chimneys get inspected each year, and a light-use fireplace is no exception. Light use cuts down on creosote, but it doesn't stop corrosion, nesting birds or water damage. A yearly inspection keeps you informed about all three.

What does a chimney sweep visit include?

The tech protects the room, inspects the firebox, damper and flue, and removes soot and creosote with brushes and a vacuum system. The outside of the chimney, including the cap and crown, is checked from the roof when access is safe. You get a rundown of what was found before anything else is scheduled.

Can you work on a condo fireplace in a building with several units?

Usually, yes, as long as there is safe roof access to the chimney or vent. Some associations require advance notice or approval for roof work, so let us know when you call. Factory-built units often need chase cover or cap attention near the coast, along with a standard cleaning.
